Shades of Red Hair

When you’re trying to choose the right hair color that you want it can be quite daunting. Whether you’re ordering online, buying from a store or having it professionally done. How do you choose?!

Just like brunettes and blondes, there are lots and lots of different shades of red hair. If you haven’t dyed your hair before you might not be sure what shade will suit you, different shades look better on different people. You have to try and figure out which will look best on you.

One of the key things when choosing a red hair color is your skin tone. As with blonde hair, your skin tone will make a huge impact on how the hair color will make you look.

Light Skin Tones

People who naturally have red hair have pale skin. If you have light skin then you don’t really want to have a hair color that’s going to wash out your skin, which means you’re best sticking with lighter shades of red hair.

Think auburn, copper or strawberry blonde. These shades of red will blend nicely with your skin tone and also make sure your hair stands out but doesn’t stand out too much.

If you really want to get noticed then try a really bright red hair dye, this trend is favored by modern day pin up girls and really makes a statement. You have to have lots of confidence to pull off this look as it really will grab peoples attention.

Medium Skin Tones

If your skin tone is somewhere between light and dark, you have lots of options available that will suit you! Usually a slightly darker red will suit a medium skin tone better than a light red but some lighter shades of red can also work well.

Another idea is to have red highlights through your hair, this looks more natural with darker hair colors. Having red highlights will also help you to decide whether or not you would like to have all of your hair dyed red, if you’re unsure.

Lighter shades of red won’t suit a medium skin tone very well, instead of the hair contrasting with the skin color it will simply all blend together, it’s best to avoid these shades.

Dark Skin Tones

Despite what others may say bright red hair can suit darker skin tones. As Rhianna proved, darker skin tones can definitely suit a bright red hair color. The contrast makes your hair really stand out and make a statement. You need to be fairly confident to pull off such a contrasting color though, expect attention!

Dark red hair also suits darker skin tones, they work well together and compliment each other giving a very sophisticated look.

One of the shades that people with a darker skin tone should stay away from is very light / ginger. This shade won’t suit the skin tone at all and you’ll soon be wanting to dye it another color!

The Many Shades of Red Hair

There are many different shades of red hair, here we’ll try and go through most of them!

Natural red
Auburn
Cherry red
Burnt red
Dark red
Fiery red
Strawberry blonde
Copper
Raspberry
Pomegranate
Reddish brown

Don’t forget that this list doesn’t include all of the slightly different shades depending on the manufacturer! For example Garniers cherry red hair dye might not be anything like Loreals cherry red!

Ask a Professional

If you’re not sure about which shade of red will suit you, consult a professional stylist and ask for their opinion. Then if you’re still not sure, the best thing to do would be to best the dye on a small part of your hair to give you a good idea of how it will look.
